In which I surprise myself and write Joffrey Baratheon meta

theongreyjoy:

Probably after Cat, Robb, and Cersei, I feel like Joffery is the character who’s been manipulated the most by D & D (although less people are inclined to care because he’s Joffrey) But GRRM’s episode really illustrated my frustrations with how this character has been written. I’m not a Joffrey fan and I will probably never be one, but I feel bad that his character has been so twisted by the show.

The only possible explanation I can find that sort of justifies this change is that because joffrey will be killed soon enough, it is to reinforce Cersei as a ‘symphathetic’ character to make her downward spiral all that more dramatic. TV viewers are generally seen as ‘dumb’ so some things need to be simplified to actually have impact. Subtlety is not very well picked up on by casual viewers. Another reason I suppose is to remind us (for the first time this season) that joffrey is beyond manipulating in some ways, which shows the motive for the tyrells to kill him.

A painting done by Picasso in his mid-twenties was worth, he found, an average of four times as much as a painting done in his sixties. For Cézanne, the opposite was true. The paintings he created in his mid-sixties were valued fifteen times as highly as the paintings he created as a young man. The freshness, exuberance, and energy of youth did little for Cézanne. He was a late bloomer—and for some reason in our accounting of genius and creativity we have forgotten to make sense of the Cézannes of the world.

Studies

As an international business student, I am surrounded by the businessmen and women of tomorrow. It is quite depressing to see their vision on life. To them it is all about becoming rich. And I mean that in the most literal way possible. In fact, they tell me they started doing this so they can get rich.

Isn’t that extremely sad? What remains for these people when they are rich? Ambition? No. Love? Maybe. Feeling good? Who knows.

I pity the people who have no other goals than to become rich and drive a nice car. I have trouble understanding it too. If you think for just a bit, you realize nothing remains after you’ve reached that goal right?

Of course I would like to be successful and have a lot of money. But I would want that just so I can buy myself some time. So I can do something with that money. So I can do whatever the hell I want. Now Isn’t that a goal worth working for. I have so many ideas. Movies, Games, Magazines, Music, Hardware, Art, Restaurants, it never stops.

That is what I would like. What I would work for.

But where do I start?

Happiness is not in the mere possession of money; it lies in the joy of achievement, in the thrill of creative effort.
